Stearic acid is a naturally derived vegetable fatty acid commonly used in skincare and the cosmetic industry as a thickener and hardener. It occurs naturally in butters such as Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter.

It is typically used in formulations for its ability to improve texture, as a emulsifier to stabilise emulsions, and enhance the spreadability of creams and lotions. 

Stearic Acid also adds to the hardness and slip of balms and butters, we love to use it in body butters as it helps to raise the melting point. This is especially helpful when in a hot climate. 

Our stearic acid is triple pressed, which means that it is refined to remove impurities and is high quality so it can be used in cosmetics.

 How do we use Stearic Acid?
  • As a co-emulsifer in emulsions
  • Thicken creams and lotions.
  • In lip balm to harden the formulation
  • In body butters
  • To harden solid shampoo bars
  • In stick formulations such as DIY deodorant
  • To harden soap
  • In cream cleansers to add creamy foam
  • To add firmness to candles
How to use and formulate with Stearic Acid

In skincare formulations such as lip balms, creams, lotions and body butters, add Stearic Acid to the oil phase and heat. Ensure you stir and melt thoroughly to avoid granulation.

When making soap, add stearic acid to your hard butters and melt. Adding some Stearic Acid will help provide a creamy lather to your soap and harden the soap bar. This is especially useful if you are using a lot of soft oils.

When making candles, Stearic Acid adds firmness and can help make unmoulding pillar candles easier.  It can also contribute to a longer burn-time. Candles that include Stearic Acid can have a white smooth look.
