What is Cetearyl Alcohol?

Cetearyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol derived from natural oils and fats. It is a white, waxy ingredient commonly used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. Despite the name, Cetearyl Alcohol does not behave like typical alcohols, such as ethyl or rubbing alcohol, which can dry out the skin. Instead, it acts as an emollient, helping to soften and condition the skin.

Why do we need Cetearyl Alcohol?

Cetearyl Alcohol is a wonderful ingredient to include in your skincare formulations as it has many benefits.

 Ways to use Cetearyl Alcohol

Cetearyl Alcohol can be used in water-in-oil emulsions, and oil-in-water emulsions such as creams, lotions and moisturisers. It can also be used in anhydrous formulations such as body butters and body scrubs. We like to use it as a co-emulsifier and blend with emulsifying waxes such as Olivem 1000 or Ecomulse.  

How to formulate with Ceteary Alcohol

1. Determine Usage Rate: First of all determine how much Cetearyl Alcohol you need to use.

• Creams and lotions: Typically, Cetearyl Alcohol can be used at 0.2% to 5%.  In a cream, Cetearyl Alcohol is used at around 0.5% to help improve the structure and stability of the oil phase while giving a good skin feel and lotions and creams
• Hair conditioners: Use up to 15% in a hair conditioner formula to give slip and increase viscosity of the product.
• Anhydrous products: Use between 1% to 25% depending on the application. More Cetearyl Alcohol can add a waxy feel so sometimes less is better.

2. Melt with Oils: Cetearyl Alcohol needs to be melted with other oils and butters in your formulation; add it to the oil phase and heat it in a double boiler until fully melted.
