How to Make Orange and Ylang Ylang Emulsified Body Scrub

How to Make Orange and Ylang Ylang Emulsified Body Scrub

There's nothing like soft smooth skin and that freshly scrubbed feeling. An exfoliating body scrub with Orange and Ylang Ylang will give you that feeling, plus it will feel like you have been transported to a beautiful tropical island.

For this DIY, all you need are a few carefully measured ingredients such as sugar, camellia and apricot oils, and a touch of shea butter for an added skin-loving boost. Of course, the stars of the show are the essential oils. The zesty sweet orange and the floral ylang ylang pair beautifully together to create an intoxicating aroma that brings the tropical spa experience right into your bathroom.

Now this scrub is different from standard sugar scrubs. It's an emulsified scrub and we have used Olivem 1000 which is a natural emulsifier derived from olives.

Why use an Emulsified Scrub?

Unlike typical oil-based scrubs, emulsified scrubs rinse off cleanly, leaving your skin moisturised but not overly greasy. The emulsification process allows the oils and water in your bath or shower to mix, which helps to reduce the oily residue. This scrub contains a mixture of oils, butters, and an emulsifier. This combination allows the scrub to turn into a creamy lotion upon contact with water, providing a rich moisturising effect.

 FAQs

Q - Water is not an ingredient in the formulation, why do we need a preservative?

A - Even though water isn't an ingredient in the formulation, it's important to include a preservative because water can be introduced during use. When you scoop the scrub out with wet hands or if water splashes into the jar during a bath or shower, it can introduce water into the product. This water can potentially become a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and yeast. Therefore, a preservative is needed to ensure the product remains safe and effective to use over time.

If you plan on using the scrub immediately, then you can leave out the preservative.

Q - The scrub feels too scrubby and rough on my skin

A - If the scrub feels too rough on your skin, try reducing the amount of pressure you're applying while scrubbing. The key is to gently massage the scrub onto your skin in a circular motion, letting the sugar granules do their job without added force. Also, ensure your skin is well-wetted before application, as this can help to soften the scrub's feel. If the problem persists, you may have sensitive skin that could benefit from a scrub with finer granules, or less granules.

Q - The texture of scrub is too hard and I prefer a more liquid scrub.

A: If you prefer a more liquid scrub, you can slightly adjust the formulation. The texture of the scrub is largely influenced by the ratio of oils, butters and emulsifer to the sugar. By increasing the quantity of liquid oils or reducing the amount of Shea butters and Olivem 1000, you can achieve a softer, more liquid consistency. Remember to mix it well before using to ensure the oils and sugar are evenly distributed.
